Grade structures and student grade selection at Trafalgar PS

The allocation of students to grade levels is a time consuming and complex process.  The following factors are taken into consideration when designing our grade structures and grouping students into classes.

Grade structures
Each year the school is funded based on the number of students at each grade level. This funding allows us to employ teaching staff and educational support staff. In the junior grades we must keep the grade numbers to a 1:21 ratio. That means one teacher for every 21 students in Prep to year 2. Therefore our grade structures will differ every year, depending on the amount of students we have enrolled in each year level. This is why some year levels contain students in the same year level (straight grade) and students across a couple of year levels (composite grades).

There is no educational research or data that suggests that either of these groupings is better or worse than the other.. The important factors are the ability of the teacher, or, group of teachers responsible for that year level, to meet the individual needs of each child.

Individual Grades are grouped according to:
  • Fair academic spread of abilities in Literacy / Numeracy, across year levels
  • Fair spread of social behaviours & needs (Low, Medium, High needs) across year levels
  • Balance of supplementary funded students, across year levels
  • Even spread of genders (Boys / Girls) where possible
  • Year level balance (where possible)
  • Each student having someone they know
Teachers are allocated a grade group once the process above has been completed. Teachers do not pick the students in their grade, nor do they pick where the grade will be located.

All teachers work in teams across each unit and have a joint responsibility for planning curriculum, assessment and events.

Parents and carers are invited to contact the school in writing if they have particular concerns regarding their child’s placement for the following year. This is not a process that is designed to provide parents with the choice of teacher. Decisions by the principal team will be made if there is any evidence to suggest that a child will be adversely educationally disadvantaged based on the grade or teacher they have been allocated.

Once all the above information is collated, the teachers are selected, students and parents are notified.  It is not the practice of our school to change students between grades after the allocation has been completed.
